The Music of the Night

Sometimes it´s really scaring how quickly time flies by. So another year is over again and it has been a quite important
one for all of us with Tarja starting her actual solo career with the release of her first solo album "My Winter Storm"
and the subsequent concerts of the Warm Up Tour 2007. Putting all subjectivity apart, for me "My Winter Storm" is a brilliant
album that touches you emotionally in a way hardly any other artist is able to do. And I guess many of you who visit this site
feel the same about it.
Tarja said that a great part of "My Winter Storm" has been inspired by the Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho and that the
idea behind the album is the importance of finding freedom and following one´s dreams. Actually there´re a lot of books about
this subject written by many different authors like "The Dolphin" by Sergio Bambaren, "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" by
Richard Bach and "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint Exupéry, just to name a few. Even though these stories about dolphins,
seagulls and little princes certainly have truth in them, they´re too simple and with too much good faith to fit real life.
I´ve read most of Coelho´s books myself and for me he´s one of the very rare persons who understood what life really is about.
There´re people who think that he´s just writing nonsense and who don´t really get why his books are so popular.
But I guess in order to understand his thoughts you have to go through certain life experiences yourself.
Or you just belong to the few people who happened not to drink from the well the rest of mankind uses, but from a separate one,
as he implies in his book "Veronika decides to die". Anyway, the main idea in Coelho´s book also is the importance of following
your dreams. In contrast to other writers he does not put his stories in fairytale - surroundings (except for "The Alchemist" maybe),
but into real life situations pointing out that this journey isn´t an easy one at all but connected with a lot of struggling.
The real suffering only begins if you start to follow your destiny, but in the end it´s the only way to learn something in life
and find happiness. Tarja managed to express that spirit in her album very well.
With that in mind I would like to begin this year with a poem called "Ithaca" by the Greek poet Konstantinos P. Kavafis:
When you leave for Ithaca,
may your journey be long
and full of adventures and knowledge.
Do not be afraid of Laestrigones, Cyclopes
or furious Poseidon;
you won't come across them on your way
if you don't carry them in your soul,
if your soul does not put them in front of your steps.
I hope your road is long.
May there be many a summer morning,
and may ports for the first time seen
bring you great joy.
May you stop at Phoenician marts,
to purchase there the best of wares,
mother-of-pearl and coral, amber, ebony,
hedonic perfumes of all sorts;
may you go to various Egyptian towns
and learn from a people with so much to teach.
Don't lose sight of Ithaca,
for that's your destination.
But take your time;
better that the journey lasts many a year
and that your boat only drops anchor on the island
when you have grown rich
with what you learned on the way.
Don't expect Ithaca to give you many riches.
Ithaca has already given you a fine voyage;
without Ithaca you would never have parted.
Ithaca gave you everything and can give you no more.
If in the end you think that Ithaca is poor,
don't think that she has cheated you.
Because you have grown wise and lived an intense life,
and that's the meaning of Ithaca.
I wish all of you a fulfilling journey to your personal Ithaca and a
Happy, healthy and successfull new year 2008
